The heartwood is dull to bright pinkish-red, sometimes with a purple-red tinge and often streaked a deep reddish-brown. The wood is highly aromatic.
North American
When freshly cut, the heartwood is golden yellow, sometimes with reddish streaks, but becomes golden brown upon exposure. The thin sapwood is white.
African
The heartwood is light yellowish-tan with dark brown streaks. The usually very narrow sapwood is creamy yellow and clearly demarcated from the heartwood.
